Getting Family to Be Organized

How do I get my husband to put his stuff away? How do I make my kids clean up their rooms? How on earth do I keep an organized house with my kids?

What’s the secret to getting my family to be more organized???

Well, today is your lucky day, because the secret is simple and you may even dislike me for saying it, but the true secret to maintaining an organized lifestyle in a home full of independent, active, totally normal people is…DRUMROLL PLEASE…

I know, I know, it may not be what you want to hear; but, the truth is there is no magic formula, voodoo ritual or prescription drug that can change the behavior and habits of others. The only thing we can do is start with ourselves to create those changes and set the example and standard for our family members.

Think of it this way.

Imagine being a Captain of a Naval ship. On that ship you have many naval officers looking to you to set the standards and expectations of their dress, daily maintenance of their rooms and tasks. Through daily inspections and corrections, it’s your job to make sure they are fulfilling those expectations.

While I have zero experience in the Navy. I do believe we can set those same expectations in our homes. We have family members looking to us to set a standard and example. When we show them through our daily habits, as well as set clear, daily expectations for them, it helps guide our family into a much more organized way of living.

When they throw their jacket on the floor, have them pick it up and place it where it goes. Keys left on the kitchen table? Feel free to place them where they belong and kindly remind the family member where the keys belong. Even if it takes 50 reminders on your part, keep reminding them Captain!

It takes effort, consistency, and patience. But, in my opinion, it is worth every effort. Over time your daily example and direction will help your family become naturally more organized as they make changes for themselves.

But it all begins with YOU. It’s truly the secret to create change for you and your family.

Ready to dive deeper into how to create this change for yourself and stop blaming family members for the mess?
